HOW DOES THE WATER TREATMENT WORK?
The principle of biological water treatment is based on the targeted cultivation of biofilm on the filter material. Through its growth, this extracts nutrients from the water, which accumulate as a result of use and surface inputs. Without appropriate water treatment, these inputs would lead to the formation of algae. There are special filter materials in the filter system, which receive an even, constant flow, causing a biofilm to form on them. This removes all nutrients from the water, making it biologically stable and naturally clean. A mass development of algae, plankton or bacteria in the pool is not possible under normal loads and when used properly. Chemical preservation or disinfection is therefore neither necessary nor desirable.
The filter is characterized by minimal energy consumption. The strictly defined filter volume in connection with the rapid inflow offers optimal conditions for the growth of biofilm (inflow x nutrient content = biofilm growth). In contrast to conventional, usually complicated layered filters, only one particle size fraction is used, which results in the filter's typical high operational reliability.
In addition, flushing the filter bed with air enables the filter body to be cleaned quickly and with almost no residue, thus guaranteeing an even and permanent flow of the filter material in all areas, whereby the filter cleaning can be carried out within a very short time without a prior break in operation.
IS THE BIOWATERPOOL HYGIENICALLY SAFE?
The water meets all standards of legal hygiene regulations. Since private systems are built using the same technology as publicly used systems, which are subject to strict legal limits of the swimming pool hygiene regulations, you can assume perfect water quality. This quality has also been confirmed by many scientific studies.
WHY IS THE BIOWATERPOOL BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH?
The BioWaterPool shows a water pH value of 8.4. Every mountain lake has exactly the same value. This is related to the CO2 concentration of the air we breathe and is described in the lime-carbonic acid balance. In contrast, with chemically treated water, the pH value is set between 7.0 - 7.4 so that the chemical treatment works. Chemically treated water in conventional pools requires this pH value so that the chemicals function as cell poisons or other chemicals function as oxidants. Since every body of water tries to achieve a pH value of 8.4, acids (pH-min) are usually used in conventional pools to lower this pH value. This requires regular measurement and appropriate dosage of the acids.
Everyone notices exactly this pH value. Since this value is 8.4 in natural water, we also experience this refreshing feeling when we step out of it. Water with this value does not dry out the skin nearly as much as chemically treated water. Naturally treated water is usually the best option for wonderful bathing pleasure, especially for people with skin problems (neurodermatitis, etc.). In addition, the water quality of a BioWaterPool causes no dry skin or burning, red eyes. Negative effects are virtually impossible, as a BioWaterPool uses no chlorine or chemical additives. In addition, the water requirement and energy consumption are significantly lower. The BioWaterPool is only filled once and does not have to be completely emptied in the fall like a conventional pool. This means that thousands of liters of chemically treated water do not end up in the environment.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL WATER TREATMENT?
Biological water purification by systems from Biofermenta
Water purification is based on nature, as it occurs in a flowing body of water. The state of crystal clear water is achieved due to the absence of nutrients. The filter systems installed in a BioWaterPool – developed by Biofermenta – remove the relevant nutrients from the system. The resulting natural, clear water is visually indistinguishable from conventional chemically treated pool water, with little additional cleaning effort.
Chemical water purification
The most common chemical used to keep the water clear in conventional pools is chlorine. It destroys all micro-organisms in the water. The water smells and tastes unpleasant, not to mention the negative side effects of this chemical.
IS SALT WATER TREATMENT MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY?
Salt water is considered particularly skin-friendly and natural. However, water in salt-treated pools has nothing in common with natural salt water from the sea. The salt concentration in seawater (salinity) is on average 3.5% by mass. This corresponds to a salt content of 35g per kilogram of seawater. This means that for a 50 m³ pool you would have to add approx. 1,750 kg of salt!! When salt water electrolysis is used in chemically treated pool water, the salt content is only 0.3%. The known positive properties of sea water are not present here. The salt only serves as a starting product for the electrolysis of hypochlorite solution. It is a completely normal chlorine treatment, i.e. a “mini chemical factory”. Salt water electrolysis tanks also need a pH value between 7.0 and 7.4. This value can only be achieved by dosing acids. Additionally, additional chemical flocculants and algicides are required.
So a pool with salt water treatment cannot be considered more environmentally friendly than a pool with conventional chlorine treatment.
DOES THE QUALITY OF THE FILLING WATER PLAY A ROLE?
Yes, the fill water quality plays a role for all pools, regardless of whether they are treated chemically or biologically. With chemical treatment, the quality of the fill water is not taken into account. However, the worse the fill water, the higher the chemical consumption.
At the BioWaterPool, the limit value for phosphates in filling water is <10 µg P/l. This limit is undercut by the technology of Biofermenta. However, the complete removal of nutrients outdoors and through swimming is not realistic. If the fill water is heavily contaminated, it must be treated. There are simple ways to do this.
WHAT DOES THE WATER QUALITY IN A BIOWATERPOOL DEPEND ON?
Essentially on two factors, the fill water quality and the nutrient input from outside.
The limit value of the filling water for phosphates is <10𝝁g P/l. Some other parameters, which must be examined using a suitable water analysis, are also crucial. Heavily contaminated fill water must be treated. There are simple ways to do this.
In order to prevent the entry of nutrients from outside as far as possible, it must be structurally ensured that no contaminated surface water can get into the natural pool. Likewise, suitable building materials should be used and locations in the immediate crown area of trees, etc. should be avoided.
Unfortunately, the entry of nutrients through the air through pollen, etc. cannot be controlled.
IS THE WATER ALWAYS COMPLETELY CLEAR?
When operated correctly and following all guidelines (nutrient input from outside), the water is absolutely clear. However, if the nutrient input is too high, clouding can occur, which the biological filter clears up over time and absolute clarity is restored.
IS A BIOWATERPOOL A LOT OF WORK?
Since this is a natural water treatment process, biofilm can form more easily in the pool. However, this is regularly removed by the pool robot. In those places that the robot cannot reach, you have to do manual work every now and then. Winterising and re-opening the pool takes just a few simple steps.
HOW MUCH SPACE DOES A BIOWATERPOOL NEED IN THE GARDEN?
A BioWaterPool can be realized in every garden. There are biologically treated sauna plunge pools as small as 2 x 2 m!
CAN A BIOWATERPOOL BE HEATED?
A BioWaterPool can be operated with an air heat pump and therefore heated without any problems. The belief that warm water leads to more algae formation only applies to stagnant water (biotopes with sediment formation). Since a BioWaterPool is effectively “flowing water” with biological treatment, the bio-filter (the good bacteria) also works better at warm water temperatures - so heating is actually an advantage.
CAN A BIOWATERPOOL BE ROOFED OVER?
Of course! Roofing over a BioWaterPool brings additional benefits. On the one hand, the bathing time is longer in spring and autumn because the water does not cool down as quickly. On the other hand, the roof reduces entry from outside (flower pollen, etc.), which is beneficial for water quality.
CAN MY EXISTING SYSTEM (SWIMMING POND, CHLORINE POOL) BE CONVERTED?
Switching to natural water treatment is basically possible with any existing system. In most cases, existing pools can be used.
